Shipping could be an opportunity to reduce the global climate impact from the transport sector. However, it is a challenge to reduce the associated risk regarding impacts on health and ecosystems both locally and regionally. Establishing the balance between these requires a thorough and integrated assessment of the contribution of emissions from shipping.
The overall aim of this research program is to address the environmental impact of air pollutants emitted from shipping in perspective to current and future transportation options for urban and rural development. The global importance of shipping is expected to increase considerably over the next decades, driven by increased trade and concerns about the climate effects of alternative means of transportation. At the same time emissions from shipping can affect health and ecosystems, as well as climate.
The project focuses on air pollution originating from shipping and associated port activities and uses Gothenburg, the largest port in the Nordic countries, for a detailed case study. Gases and particles will be characterised using our measurement platforms. Two places have been selected, one in direct connection to the sea route and one with a sufficient distance for studies of atmospheric transformation of emitted ship plumes. Emissions are extensively characterised and subsequent transformations are studied in detail. The experimental results are combined with state-of-the-art modelling. The findings will be integrated with transport logistics and urban development initiatives.
